Have you ever heard of the Universal Laws?
Depending on where you search, you can find from 4 all the way up to 442 Universal Laws; and where do they come from? Well, it seems they were written somewhere around 1 A.D. and understood by ancient mystics. I'm going to leave it there, knowing you are capable of diving deeper into searching its orgins for yourself if you choose.
For this article and for you, I want to dive into this particular universal law that makes so much sense as to why you may or may not be experiencing joy at work!
I am going to talk about the Law of Detachment.
The Law of Detachment states that, although you have a desire for an outcome, you must give up your attachment to your desired outcome in order to allow it to manifest as it is meant to. Keep your intention and your focus on your desired outcome, but then let go and allow it to happen if, when and how it should.
In order to understand what the Law of Detachment is, let's start with the question...
What is attachment?
Attachment is emotional and really about wanting to be in control, a need for security and certainty, and fear of the unknown.
How many people, things, and experiences do you have an attachment to? We are all humans living in a physical-material world so I am going to guess that for the majority of us, we have a lot of attachments.
Now let's narrow our focus to business and your specific dental office place of work...
Generally speaking, each person affiliated with your dental office has specific attachments, and some of these attachments are causing trials and tribulations within your work environment.
Here are just some examples of attachments you may experience in your office:
- Employer/Dentist has an attachment to your work performance. Your employer does not want to have an underperforming team member for example, and prefers to have a productive one that can also generate money for the business.
- RDH has an attachment to how the front office creates the hygiene schedule.
- Dental Assistant has an attachment to how they want the flow of the back office to go without interrupting the dentist or themselves.
- Front office has an attachment to how the patient and/or insurance will take care of treatment payment.
- Patients have an attachment to how they will be treated or possibly mistreated during their visit.
An attachment is really an emotional expectation.
What happens when you place expectations on another person or situation?
Well, what happens is you try to control something (that is not actually within your control) to be in your favor and to make you feel better and more secure. You project out into the future (even if its only a hour into the future) an attachment to how you WANT something to happen.
But guess what... this is the act of trying to control what YOU specifically desire, which may not be in the highest good of all involved.
The employer/Dentist expects hygienists to produce, and then produce more, leaving that RDH feeling overworked and burned out.
The RDH expects the front office to understand his/her position as a health care provider and not over schedule patients, meanwhile the front office is feeling the heat from the employer to do just that.
The Dental Assistant expects the RDH to not bother them for things they can do themselves.
The front office expects the patients to understand that payment is due at the time of treatment.
The patients expect the dental insurance to cover all treatment costs...
...and the expectations and attachments to the desired outcomes that only benefit the person desiring these things goes on and on in one big viscious cycle, destroying any joy we thought we would experience in this service industry.
Phew....
So how do we rise above attachment and expectations so we can experience joy in the work place?
By understanding the Law of Detachment and applying it to our business work environment! (and all other areas as well)
The Law of Detachment invites us to surrender our emotional attachments and step into the unknown, which is where limitless possibilities live.
The known ONLY lives in the past, because it has already happened. The unknown ONLY lives in the future because what is not yet known is the future of possibility. When you understand the Law of Detachment, you let go of expectation.
Begin each morning with this simple understanding.. no matter how hard it may be to accept.
You can only control yourself, your thoughts, your actions, your behaviors, and your perceptions. By doing so, you become open to ANY and ALL possibilities, not just the ones you desire, but the possibilities that are truly meant for your highest good and everyone else involved.
Letting go and surrendering to what is, provides you with the wisdom to see that you live your life through the choices you make... and if you don't like what you see...
you have the power to detach and move forward...
which is known as growth.
